2015 Advent Retreat

Join Heart of Wisdom Monastery for a 1/2 Day Advent Retreat

Saturday, December 12th, 2015 from 9am-Noon
We’re popping-up at Plymouth Jazz & Justice Church, Oakland, CA in the Fireside Room
Gather with a diverse and inclusive* community led by Abbess Joellynn Monahan

In this season of Advent…
We gather for Solitude and Solidarity in community…
We mark the waning of the light and coming of long nights…
We slow,  amidst the hurry of the world, to Rest deeply in the Holy…
We listen for Wisdom from Scripture offering Hope in the midst of Empire…
We cultivate Joy that comes from the promise of God-With-Us…
We embody the Way of Jesus as we enter into the beginning of the church year…

Whether you celebrate Advent, the liturgical season at the start of the Christian church year, or have no idea what Advent is about, you are welcome.  Open to people of all faiths -and no particular faith- who are interested in experiencing the Christian season and  practices of Advent.

*diverse and inclusive:
Tired of being the only person of color in the room?  [You won’t be.]
Wondering if you would the only LGBTQ person present?  [Nope, you wouldn’t.]
Hoping the retreat space is accessible?  [It is.]
Looking for expansive language for the Sacred?  [We’ve got it.]
Hey, in Advent we’re preparing for the Incarnation: where the Word is made flesh in Jesus.  The Incarnation means that human bodies matter and are beloved to the Holy:  Yours.  Mine.  Ours.
Bring your gloriously whole self on retreat – ’cause that’s how we roll at Heart of Wisdom Monastery!

[Past event – registration now closed]  Cost is $30 / $50 / $70 sliding scale.
Retreat participants are asked to be present for the entire time of the retreat from 9-Noon.  You may arrive between 8:30-9:00am so you can settle in and be ready to begin at 9 o’clock.

Questions? Be in touch.

Coming from out-of-town?  You might wish to stay with our friends at Incarnation Monastery‘s Guest House in Berkeley, CA.

Heart of Wisdom Monastery is supported by the Ignite Institute’s Incubator project which supports and launches innovative new spiritually-based projects and programs by providing assistance with logistics, marketing, and organization.

  1. So very grateful you are offering this retreat, Rev. Joellynn! It was such a blessing to participate in last year’s Advent retreat. I still give thanks each I think back to it.
