White Privilege & Spiritual Direction

White Privilege & Spiritual Direction
Wednesday, February 1st, 2017 – 7-9pm
pop-up location:  All Souls Episcopal Church, Berkeley, CA
Facilitated by Rev. Joellynn Monahan, MDiv, MEd

Join East Bay Spiritual Directors for this gathering of spiritual directors and spiritual direction students living and/or working in the East Bay area.  The purpose of these gathering is to build collegial relationships, to network, and to engage in topical presentations and discussions led by our members.  [not open to the general public]

Understanding White Privilege and the impact it has on our ministries is critical to engaging in our work ethically and with integrity.  As spiritual direction colleagues and students training as spiritual directors, we will pay attention to what White Privilege is and how it impacts our lives and the spiritual direction/guidance we offer.

Our skillful and faithful inquiry will focus upon:

  1. In my life and ministry as a spiritual director/student in training, what are the daily effects of White Privilege?
  2. What are the spiritual consequences of White Privilege?
  3. How does my faith/spiritual path offer guidance and resources to respond to White Privilege?

Our process will offer time for individual reflection, conversation in affinity groups (directors of color; White directors) and sharing as a whole group.  Participants are strongly encouraged to read this article prior to attending.

This workshop is appropriate for spiritual directors who may be new to work about White Privilege as well as those who have done work on White Privilege, anti-racism, and intersectionality, including those who may be trainers and presenters on these topics themselves.
