The Reverend Joellynn Monahan is an ordained minister of Word and Sacrament in the United Church of Christ who has practiced Vipassana (Insight) Buddhist Meditation since 1998.  She is a member of Spiritual Directors International, the global professional association for spiritual directors, since 2005.   Joellynn also serves as Abbess of Heart of Wisdom Monastery, a pop-up monastery for non-monastics, based out of Oakland, CA.

She trained in interfaith spiritual direction at the Chaplaincy Institute for Arts & Interfaith Ministries; received her Masters of Divinity from Pacific School of Religion, a multi-denominational, progressive Christian seminary and member school of the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA; and completed her Masters of Education in Counseling & Human Development at St. Lawrence University, Canton, NY.

Rev. Joellynn has a passion for helping activists, religious leaders, artists, organizers, non-profit workers, and changemakers in every walk of life develop deep resources to help them be sustainable and to flourish over time.  Her ministry reflects over 25 years commitment to education and activism on social justice issues including anti-racism, gender equity, LGBTQI/SGL advocacy, disability rights, and environmental and food justice.

She previously served in a ministry of theological education and seminary administration at Pacific School of Religion which offered opportunities for liturgical leadership and accompanying students in their vocational discernment.  In addition she has served in campus ministries at UC Berkeley and University of Maryland-College Park; and on the ministerial staff of  an Unitarian Universalist congregation and a church  affiliated with the United Church of Christ, Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and Metropolitan Community Churches.  Prior to ordination preparation, she worked for a decade in secular higher education in various student services capacities and as a therapist.

A native of New Jersey (where you find the best pizza in the world) , lover of the Adirondack peak foliage in fall and cherry blossom springs in Washington, DC, she has lived in the San Francisco Bay Area with her partner since 1999.  She hecka ♥s Oakland.
